A GIF stores a full image for every frame, so length, width and frame rate decide the size. Keeping it under five seconds, capping the width at 480 px and dropping to 10-12 fps usually lands under 2-3 MB. Choosing a passage with a simple background and little motion helps just as much.
There is no hard cap, but ten seconds or less is the practical sweet spot. GIF carries no audio and stores a whole image per frame, so past about 30 seconds the file balloons into the tens of megabytes and many platforms reject it. For longer passages, convert to MP4 or WebM instead.
The GIF format allows only 256 colors per frame, so a video with millions of colors gets squeezed into a palette and smooth gradients break into visible bands. It shows up most in skies, skin tones and sunsets, where color changes gradually. If color fidelity matters, export to APNG or WebM instead — both keep the original range.
