CRF (Constant Rate Factor) determines quality. 18 is nearly lossless, 28 is moderate compression, and 40 is high compression.
For ordinary camera footage, CRF 23 typically cuts the file to 40-60% of the original with no visible loss. Pushing to CRF 28 roughly halves it again, but blocking starts to show in dark scenes and fast motion. Screen recordings, which have little motion, stay clean even at CRF 28-30.
Gmail caps attachments at 25 MB and a free Discord account at 10 MB. Drop the resolution to 720p, raise CRF to 26-28, then check the result; if it is still too big, trimming the length costs less quality than compressing harder. A one-minute 720p clip usually lands between 8 and 15 MB.
There is no server-side cap — browser memory is the real limit. Around 1 GB works reliably on desktop and about 300 MB on phones; beyond that the tab can stall. For anything larger, trim to the section you actually need first, then compress.
