Phones record the frame in its native orientation and simply write a rotation flag saying "play this turned by so many degrees." Phones and modern players read that flag and show the clip upright, while some editors and web players ignore it and play the raw orientation. Rotating and saving here turns the actual pixels, so the file then looks the same wherever you open it.
Rotating alone will not fix it — turning the clip 90 degrees just lays your subject on its side. To place a vertical video in a horizontal frame you either pad the sides, fill them with a blurred copy of the footage, or crop tightly around the subject and re-frame to the wider ratio. YouTube accepts vertical video as it is, so uploading as Shorts or in portrait costs the least quality.
