For screen viewing or the web, 150 DPI is plenty and turns an A4 page into roughly 1240×1754 px. Anything headed for print or close inspection should be 300 DPI, which costs about four times the file size. If thin table rules or small footnotes smear, try 600 DPI — but on a long document the browser's memory will hit its limit first.

For pages made mostly of text, tables and diagrams, choose PNG: it is lossless, so letter edges stay crisp, and on pages with lots of white it is often the smaller file too. Pages packed with photographs or gradients are far lighter as JPG, and the faint halo JPG leaves around text on white is usually not noticeable at normal viewing size.
