Each image is placed to fill the sheet while keeping its aspect ratio, so landscape photos land on landscape pages and portrait photos on portrait pages. When the ratio does not match the paper, white margins appear at the top and bottom or the sides — that is deliberate, so nothing gets cropped away. If you want edge-to-edge pages, crop the images to the A4 ratio (1:1.414) first with the image cropper.
Modern phone photos run 4-8 MB each, so ten of them alone push a PDF past 50 MB. The biggest win is compressing the images before you bundle them: for a document meant to be read on screen, resize the long edge to about 2000 px and set quality around 80%, and the file typically drops to a fifth of its size with no visible loss.
