The current standard is not to memorize them at all but to hand them to a password manager. Passwords a person can memorize end up reused with small variations across sites, so one breach opens the rest. A manager lets every site have a completely different random string, and the only thing you memorize is the master password that opens it. The features already built into your browser and operating system are enough to start with.
Length matters far more than symbols. A twenty-character password of nothing but lowercase letters is incomparably harder to guess than an eight-character one full of punctuation. The current NIST guidance in the United States has moved away from mandating character classes and toward length plus checking against known breach lists. Many sites still demand a symbol, so generate one that fits their rule when you must — but secure the length first.
