For internal use — stock control, warehouse labels, asset tags — you can invent numbers freely. Supplying a product to major retailers, however, requires a unique number issued through GS1, because a made-up code can collide with an existing product and ring up as something else at the till. Use this tool to turn the number you were properly assigned into a scannable image.

Start with size: EAN-13 is standardised at about 37 mm wide, and shrinking below 80% of that makes read rates collapse. Next look at the white margins on either side — a scanner needs roughly ten bar-widths of clear space to find where the code begins and ends. Finally, check print quality: bars that bleed from an inkjet, glare on a glossy label, or a code wrapped around a curved surface will all defeat the reader.
