If anything, it is fairer. A real die can wear at the corners or carry slightly uneven material density, nudging one face up a fraction more often, and a person's throwing habit affects the outcome too. The browser's random generator has none of that physical bias, so every face carries the same probability. Where the result must be auditable, though — a casino table or an official tournament — the rules call for inspected physical dice.
The first number is how many dice to roll and the number after the d is how many faces each has. So 3d6 means roll three six-sided dice and add them up, while 2d20 means two twenty-sided dice. A trailing modifier like 3d6+2 is simply added to the total. Rolling several dice pushes the sum toward the middle, so 3d6 lands on 10 or 11 most often and hits 3 or 18 only rarely.
