Instagram uses 1080×1080 for square, 1080×1350 for portrait and 1080×1920 for stories and reels. For a blog body image, around 1200 px wide stays sharp on most screens without a heavy file. The more cells in the grid, the fewer pixels each photo gets — so past four cells, start from 1600 px wide or more.

Yes. Each photo is fitted into its assigned cell, so images with a different ratio get cropped at the edges or padded with margins. If people appear in the shots, crop them beforehand so the face sits near the middle of the cell. When you want a tidy overall look, building one collage from portraits only — or landscapes only — reads much cleaner.

About 1-2% of the total width — roughly 10-20 px on a 1080 px canvas — works well. With no gap the photos bleed into each other; past 40 px the empty space starts to dominate the picture. A white background makes each photo pop, while a black one groups dark images together, so pick based on the overall brightness of the set.
